Meet the Mayor
Mayor Nancy Chaney
Moscow is an exceptional community, and I feel fortunate to serve as mayor. The diversity and commitment of Moscow’s population invites spirited dialogue, uncommon opportunities for learning, an expectation of tolerance, and the probability that we’ll never be bored. Work in local government here is stimulating, and regularly draws upon educational and life experiences. It is fulfilling, allowing interaction with people from many walks of life. If you want to make a positive difference, please consider for elected office, volunteering, or simply telling us what you think.
I enjoy meeting people and appreciate input. Meetings and events sometimes take place away from City Hall, so appointments are encouraged, although drop-ins are welcome. Phone 883-7080 to schedule.
Personal: Born in Seattle, 1955. Raised near San Francisco. Attended high school and college in Boise. Moved to Moscow in 1980. Attended UI 2000-2002. Married to Gary Bryan, DVM. Five adult stepchildren with growing families. I enjoy travel, performing arts, and outdoor recreation, including running, bicycling and alpine skiing.
Affiliations: Board member of Latah Trail Foundation and Stepping Stones, Inc. Member of Association of Idaho Cities, North Idaho Mayors Coalition, Moscow League of Women Voters, University of Idaho Alumni Association, Palouse Road Runners, and State Environment Committee. Elected AIC President, 2011. Active in National League of Cities, with appointments to the 2010 Executive Board Nominating Committee, University Communities Council Steering Committee (Chair), and Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee. 2010 CLAIR Fellow in Japan for the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations. Convenor Poverty on the Palouse problem-solving alliance and Co-Chair for the 2011/12 Moscow League of Women Voters study on poverty.

Employment: Since my husband’s retirement from WSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998, we have owned and operated Veterinary Ophthalmic Specialties, Inc., with worldwide sales of products related to animal eyes. In 2002-2003, I worked with University of Idaho Humanities Fellows, coordinating a program called Sense of Place in the Pacific Northwest http://www.class.uidaho.edu/humanities/intro.htm. The experience was simultaneously reaffirming and formative with respect to my attachment to this place and the people who live here
Objectives: Nurture what is best about Moscow. Emphasize connections between people and the environment, including a functional watershed education facility by the wastewater treatment plant. Encourage partnerships for economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Develop ordinances that support the updated Comprehensive Plan. Move forward on Palouse River Drive ball fields and safe access to them. Grow public art. Expand GIS (geographic information systems) database. Promote active living and bicycle-pedestrian amenities. Improve accessible public transit with an Intermodal Transit Center. Diversify the local economy through Legacy Crossing Urban Renewal and professional-technical training and green technologies in the southeast Moscow light industrial park. Complement University of Idaho strengths.
